It seems that before the new law, marital assets were split evenly unless one of the parties was found guilty of bigamy, domestic violence, abandoning the family or living with a lover for three months or longer. Jing, Na and Yan report that the partner whose parents bought the property for the couple will retain sole ownership in a divorce under the new law.
Jing, Na and Yan tell the story of a young woman who demanded that her name be listed as co-owner of the “matrimonial apartment,” which her husband’s parents bought, so she would have a stake in it if the marriage failed.
Lawyer Zhang Jing was quoted as saying, “It was unpleasant for the young couple and their families……”
I wonder if the one-child policy that was introduced in China in the late 1970s, and created by the Chinese government to address social, economic, and environmental problems in China due to their massive population, has put young women in an more advantaged position.
The policy prevented between 250 and 300 million births from its implementation until 2000, according to Chinese officials, and led to female infanticide and China’s gender imbalance and shortage of marriageable-aged women. Dallas Car Accident related News: Tragedy on the Roads
